About
São Miguel Nature Park, established in 2008, is constituted of protected areas directed to the conservation of the most representative elements of biodiversity and geodiversity, with the objective of environmental sustainability, conservation, protection and management.
Due to its climate and geomorphological conditions, São Miguel island presents numerous landforms, ecosystems and habitats. Some of these elements are classified as geosites of Azores UNESCO Global Geopark and Ramsar Sites and integrated into the Natura 2000 network because of their importance, rarity and sensibility. The Nature Park’s protected areas are adapted to the geographic, environmental, cultural, political and administrative features of the territory and include two Nature Reserves, three Natural Monuments, 11 Protected Areas for the Management of Habitats or Species, two Protected Landscape Areas and five Protected Areas of Resources Management.
The Nature Park has available to its visitors the Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre, the Furnas Environmental Interpretation Centre, the Pineapple Culture Interpretation Centre and the Lagoa das Sete Cidades Environmental Complex, as well as walking trails that go through several protected areas.
