Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species
With about 217 hectares, this protected area is characterized by the presence of aesthetic and cultural values in a traditional humanized landscape of the island’s cattle ranches, on lands with a high level of waterlogging.
In this zone, persist natural habitat protected by the Habitats Directive, such as forested peatbogs and Laurel Forest, where occurs species such as Azorean laurel (Laurus azorica), juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), Azorean plum (Prunus azorica), Azorean fire tree (Morella faya), tree heath (Erica azorica), Azorean blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), laurustinus (Viburnum treleasei), cape myrtle (Myrsine africana) and Picconia azorica.
This area integrates the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Special Area of Conservation (SAC) within the Natura 2000 network.
