Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species

With about 217 hectares, this protected area is characterized by the presence of aesthetic and cultural values in a traditional humanized landscape of the island’s cattle ranches, on lands with a high level of waterlogging.

In this zone, persist natural habitats protected by the Habitats Directive, such as forested peatbogs and Laurel Forest, where occurs species such as Azorean Laurel (Laurus azorica), Short Leafed Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), Azorean Cherry (Prunus azorica), Firetree (Morella faya), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Azorean Viburnum (Viburnum treleasei), African Boxwood (Myrsine africana) and Azorean Picconia (Picconia azorica).

This area integrates the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Special Area of Conservation (SAC) within the Natura 2000 network.
