Located in the northeast part of Terceira, this protected area has about 105 hectares and is on the island’s oldest volcanic complex, on a section of a relatively recent basaltic flow from near the Pico do Carvão.

This area represents a forest area with ancient populations of Eucalyptus globulus and Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). It constitutes a significant habitat for a diversity of endemic invertebrates of the Azores and in particular of Terceira, highlighting the spider Elipsocus azoricus and the insect Cixius azoterceirae. It is also an important nesting site of the Azores Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus azorica).
