Biscoito das Fontinhas
Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species
With about 105 hectares, this protected area represents a forest area with ancient stands of Eucalyptus globulus and Cryptomeria japonica, located in the island’s oldest volcanic complex, on a section of a relatively recent basaltic flow leaving from near the Pico do Carvão.
This area constitutes a habitat for an important diversity of endemic invertebrates of the Azores and in particular of Terceira Island, highlighting the spider Elipsocus azoricus and the insects Tarphius azoricus and Cixius azoterceirae. It is also an important nesting site of the bird Columba palumbus azorica.
