Located north of Terceira island, this coastal marine area has about 42 hectares and features a variety of habitat of rock formations such as reefs, walls or gorges and sandy clearings.

This area is colonized by fish species such as Mediterranean Slipper Lobster (Scyllarides latus), the Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse (Coris julis), the Ornate Wrasse (Thalassoma pavo), the Barred Hogfish (Bodianus scrofa), the Salema (Sarpa salpa), the Longfin Yellowtail (Seriola rivoliana), the Atlantic Bonito (Sarda Sarda), the Blue Jack Mackarel (Trachurus picturatus) and the damselfish (Chromis limbata and Abudefduf luridus).

It constitutes an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) by BirdLife International organization.
