The Casa do Tio João is in Caldeira de Santo Cristo, the ex-libris of São Jorge. Featuring traditional architecture, this country house offers a comfortable place to enjoy the peace, tranquillity and a nature that is rarely found. The access to the house is made by two pedestrian routes, irregular and not suitable for hand luggage. The first trail (Serra do Topo - Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo) is 5 km to the accommodation (about 2 hours). It is recommended to make this trail to get to the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo since it is descending and allows to enjoy a magnificent landscape and a waterfall that is on the way. The second trail (Fajã dos Cubres - Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo) is 4 km away and is less technical than the first. It is recommended for less-trained hikers or to leave Caldeira.
The absence of public lighting makes it possible to see a clear and perfect sky to observe stars. The house has battery-powered electricity from sunset until 11:00 p.m., so visitors can charge their electronic devices and have light in all rooms of the house.
Guests can use the basic equipment and condiments of the kitchen (salt, olive oil, garlic, etc.) as well as the barbecue, to prepare their own meals. Casa do Tio João is just a 5-minute walk from Fajã Lagoon and the sea where guests can swim, snorkel, surf and scuba diving. There are fantastic trails from the Caldeira, for hiking enthusiasts. The property is less than 30 km from the airport and from Velas where guests can take the ferryboat connected to the other islands of the archipelago.
