With about 97 hectares, this terrestrial protected area covers the slope of the Fajã das Almas.

In this area, it is possible to observe marine avifauna species, such as Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) and Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), and plant species such as Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), Firetree (Morella faya) and Azorean Picconia (Picconia azorica).

It is also classified as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of the BirdLife International organization.
