With about 97 hectares, this terrestrial protected area covers the slope of the Fajã das Almas.

In this area it is possible to observe marine avifauna species, such as Sterna dougallii, Sterna hirundo and Calonectris borealis, and plant species such as Erica azorica, Morella faya and Picconia azorica.

It is also classified as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of the BirdLife International organization.
