This terrestrial has an area of about 62 hectares and covers the entire southern coast of the island from the jetty of Marina das Velas to Urzelina. 

This area is extremely important because many seabirds species nest on the high slopes, such as the Calonectris borealis. Regarding the flora, there are specimens of the endemic species Morella faya, Erica azorica and Picconia azorica.

It is also classified as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) of the BirdLife International organization.
