The municipality of São Roque do Pico is the headquarters of a place with an area of 144.31 km² and 3 388 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 5 parishes. The municipality is limited to the south by Lajes do Pico, to the west by Madalena and to the north by the Atlantic Ocean. This municipality was created by Foral dated 10 November 1542, by order of King Dom João III of Portugal and has since gone through the evolution of the times, is very marked by the whaling, all over the island of Pico, but in this particular village. It was also an exporter of wheat and pastries to the Kingdom. The lava lands have been hard-worked and transformed into fertile orange groves, whose fruits are of high quality. Productive vineyards were cultivated, where the Verdelho variety stands out.
