Located in the Criação Velha parish, Gruta das Torres (cave) had its origin in pahoehoe lava flows, extruded from Cabeço Bravo zone, and is the largest lava tube in the Azores.

It has about 5150 metres of total length and a maximum altitude of 15 metres. The inside is rich in geological formations, from which stand out the different types of lava stalactites and stalagmites, side benches, lava balls, striated walls and ropy lava.

This natural monument is also a priority geosite of the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark.

The Gruta das Torres is equipped with a Visitors Centre and provides a guided visit service in a natural environment, without electricity or artificial footbridges, except at the start of the trail.
