With 407 hectares, the Capelinhos, Costa Noroeste and Varadouro are outstanding areas due to their geological and biological characteristics.

These areas are home to several birds such as the Calonectris borealis, the Sterna hirundo and the Columba palumbus azorica. The west coast of the Capelinhos Volcano is the only place on the island where the Sterna dougallii nests. In this protected area are also examples of species of endemic flora such as Erica azorica, Picconia azorica and Spergularia azorica, which must be preserved.
