Pedra Rija

This viewpoint is situated on the verge of the regional road leading to the parish of Santa Bárbara, offering a prime vantage point from which to observe the area’s built and natural landscape. After climbing a flight of basalt steps, visitors are rewarded with a sweeping view over the parish, often referred to as the ‘Nativity Scene Parish’.

This name originates from the scattered layout of the houses across the hillside and the preservation of traditional architectural features, faithful to the styles introduced by the island’s first settlers. The viewpoint thus offers an insight into the relationship between human settlement, the terrain and the rural landscape of Santa Maria, making it an ideal spot for contemplation and photography.
