Area surrounding the airport

The area surrounding the airport includes the entire west coast of the island, between Ponta do Malmerendo and Baía dos Cabrestantes. In this vast area of clay soil populated by woody vegetation, situated beyond the airport runway (which is sealed), are the best areas for birdwatching: the Ponta do Malmerendo lighthouse (as a viewpoint of Ilhéu da Vila), Ribeira Seca, south of the airport, west of the airport, Lagoa do Ginjal, Abegoaria Grande and Cova Areão.
