At an altitude of around 587 metres, Pico Alto is the highest point on Santa Maria and one of the best places to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire island, as well as to observe various endemic species of flora and fauna.

Upon reaching the summit, the striking landscape contrasts that characterise Santa Maria become evident. The western half features lower, gentler terrain, with yellowish-brown hues, reflecting drier conditions and less vegetation cover. In contrast, the eastern half is clearly more humid, mountainous and wooded, with extensive green areas covering the highlands.
This vantage point offers an immediate insight into the island’s geological, ecological and climatic diversity, making Pico Alto an essential stop for anyone seeking direct contact with nature and a comprehensive understanding of the Santa Maria landscape.
