With about 595 hectares, this protected area is located off the Ponta da Ilha, on the east coast, in front of the Manhenha place (Piedade parish).

It is characterized by having a very irregular bedrock interspersed with sandy clearings. At a greater distance from the coast, it is evident the presence of boulders of various sizes. The seabed’s slope is mild, and the coastline is fringed by walls of different inclinations.

Ponta da Ilha is an important habitat for the fauna species Sterna dougallii, Sterna hirundo, Columba palumbus azoricus, Caretta caretta and Tursiops truncatus, and the flora species Lotus azoricus, Myosotis maritima, Spergularia azorica, Corema album ssp. azoricum, Picconia azorica, Juniperus brevifolia, Erica azorica, Euphorbia azorica and Daucus carota ssp. azoricus.

This area also includes the Ponta da Ilha Special Area of Conservation (SAC) within the Natura 2000 network.
