This protected area, with 275 hectares, is part of the Pedro Miguel Graben, more specifically, of the Lomba Grande fault that has the largest morphological expression of Faial Island.

The Lomba Grande is particularly relevant for its forest, covered with natural species of the Laurel Forest, and for its important ponds area, where different migratory birds, such as ducks and egrets, come to rest from their travels.
