Dia Mundial da Terra e Dia Nacional do Património Geológico

Dia Mundial da Terra e Dia Nacional do Património Geológico

22 de Abril de 2025

Today, 22 April, we celebrate two events of great importance for environmental awareness: Earth Day and National Geological Heritage Day.

Earth Day calls for protecting our planet and promoting a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. National Geological Heritage Day aims to raise public awareness of the value of the geological heritage as an integral part of the natural heritage and motivate organisations and the media to debate the role of geology in today's society.

To mark this date, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action is organising 15 environmental awareness activities on all the islands of the Archipelago between 21 and 30 April. The activities include information sessions, interpretive tours, interpretive visits to the Environmental Centres and educational activities aimed at schoolchildren and the general public. In total, more than 270 participants are expected to take part.

In addition, the "Geological Heritage in the Azores Geopark" drawing competition was launched, organised and promoted by the Azores Geopark with the support of this Regional Secretariat (https://forms.gle/owYSJ3JYGphTq2WR9).

These initiatives aim to raise awareness of the importance of environmental preservation, knowledge of our geological heritage and respect for the natural resources that sustain life on our planet.

Valuing the Earth means looking after our common future.

Preserving our geological heritage means preserving the history that shapes us.
