Protection Status: protected by the Habitats Directive and the Bern Convention; considered “endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Low tree or scrub that rarely exceeds 4 metres high and has elliptic leaves of dark green colour, with 20-30 white flowers in clusters. It usually develops above the 500 metres in craters and sheltered ravines. This species can be considered as one of the rarest endemics of the Azores.
