Scrub or small tree that gives a red fruit. The leaves have sharp lateral veins. It usually grows in areas between 500 and 700 metres altitude. It is a characteristic species of Laurel Forest. This species owes its name (“Sanguinho” which is very similar to the Portuguese word for blood “Sangue”) to the colour of the blood of colourants that were extracted from its shell, and the pink colour of its wood.
