Tree or shrub that can reach 6 metres high. It can be found from the coast to the 1700 metres (on Pico Island). It is one of the first species of Laurel Forest to recolonize abandoned areas, allowing the development of other natural species of the Azores. It is very resistant to dryness and strong winds, but not to grazing.
