Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change marks the 35th anniversary of the Faial Botanic Garden

June 18, 2021

The Faial Botanic Garden celebrates today 35 years of existence and was visited by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change.

On the occasion, Alonso Miguel had the opportunity to see the mural, which reproduces endemic plants of the Archipelago, created by the Moviment'arte Project of APADIF.

Alonso Miguel congratulated the work carried out by the users, stating that the Garden “has now become enriched with the mural painted by APADIF”.

The Botanic Gardens carries out conservation actions for species and natural habitats in the Region, namely through the Rare Plants Nursery and the Seed Bank, while at the same time contributing to the dissemination of knowledge, environmental education and scientific research.

The collections in this Garden “concentrate around 53% of the endemic species of the Azorean flora, with very rare species being found here”, he said. Habitats defined in the Natura 2000 Network and other plants linked to Azorean culture and history are also recreated here, as well as a collection of orchids on display at the Orquidário dos Açores.

Finally, the Regional Secretary stated that “the Botanic Garden also has a Pedro Miguel section that will be requalified by the Regional Government, whose requalification project is being finalized and will advance this year, as announced in the scope of the discussion of the Plan and Budget of the Region”, and where a 6-hectare Laurissilva forest habitat is currently being recovered.
