LIFE IP CLIMAZ project takes part in the meeting of the Terceira Nature Park Advisory Board

July 3, 2024

The LIFE IP CLIMAZ project was at the Terceira Nature Park Advisory Board on 14 June, where the status of the actions carried out on the island was presented and discussed.

This year, LIFE IP CLIMAZ has made significant strides in the areas of  adaptation, mitigation, and the control of invasive alien species under sub-actions C5.3 (Demonstration project for "Nature-Based Solutions" to deal with extreme climate events), C8.1 (Increasing the capacity of the DRRF's nurseries), and C8.3 (Conversion of existing forest into native forest).

In this context, th project's team worked on several watercourses identified in the Flood Risk Management Plan for the Autonomous Region of the Azores (PGRIA) to respond to the risks identified. This work involved cleaning and clearing the riverbeds, combating invasive flora by removing around 7 tonnes of biomass, planting approximately 2,700 native flora plants duly adapted and located along the riverbanks, and building some natural engineering structures to help contain the riverbeds.

In addition, approximately 4.6 hectares of existing forest were converted into native forest by planting around 12,700 plants. An orchard of endemic plants was also set up to collect genetic material, covering an area of around 0.75 hectares.

Participation in this meeting aimed to maintain and expand the involvement of regional stakeholders in LIFE IP CLIMAZ activities, promoting active and ongoing participation (Action F2.2).
