Let's preserve our endemic plants along the paths of Santa Maria

Let's preserve our endemic plants along the paths of Santa Maria

June 28, 2024

The systematic clearing of vegetation on roads and paths can threaten endemic plants that are part of the Azores' natural heritage. Realising the importance of disseminating this information and knowledge, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, through the Santa Maria Environment and Climate Change Service (SAACSMA), has organised several information sessions on Santa Maria aimed at the staff of organisations responsible for clearing roads and paths.

The aim is to help protect these endemic plants, and the results are already visible. Some of the paths are now more beautiful, with flowering plants that were previously cut down.

This session was very well received by the participants and was attended by field workers from the Vila do Porto Municipality, all the parish councils on the island of Santa Maria, and field workers from the Public Works Delegation and, of course, SAACSMA.
