Azorean Executive begins statutory visit to the island of Flores to demonstrate that "this is the government of doing"
June 26, 2024
The President of the Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, inaugurated the Waste Processing Centre on the island of Flores. The centre, which was built with a total investment of around 1.1 million euros, includes the construction of a new pavilion for depositing and treating organic waste.
The ceremony, attended by Berta Cabral, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, and Alonso Miguel, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, marked the start of the Executive's statutory visit to the island of Flores, which continues until Wednesday.
"We came to demonstrate that this is a government of doing," he said.
The Chief Executive recalled that the 13th Government "was faced with a problem that it solved" and that the resolution of this problem with the dispatch and transport of waste was used to create a new service that now provides "another capacity" for the island of Flores.
"People of Flores will also recognise the capacity of this government to do good for the island of Flores," he said, highlighting the fact that the island of Flores, as a biosphere reserve, has entered a stage to meet the European Union's requirements in terms of selective collection for recycling.
José Manuel Bolieiro praised the institutional cooperation and the "good attitude" of the mayors of Lajes and Santa Cruz das Flores, present at the ceremony, "who wanted to be part of the solution".
The first day of the statutory visit to the island of Flores also included meetings with the mayors of Lajes and Santa Cruz, and the Island Council also met at the afternoon.
