As part of LIFE IP CLIMAZ, DRAAC is recovering, restoring, and stabilising the banks of streams on São Miguel

June 4, 2024

As part of sub-action C5.3 - Demonstration project for ecosystem-based adaptation to face extreme climate change, of the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project, work is underway to recover, restore and stabilise the banks of the Tondela, Purgar, Grota da Areia and Grota da Cancela streams on the island of São Miguel.

This work, led by the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Action (DRAAC), aims to test the best way to guarantee the protection, recovery and restoration of these watercourses, through interventions in priority areas, aimed at restoring and stabilising the banks, by controlling invasive vegetation, planting endemic species and implementing natural engineering techniques whenever possible.

So far, a total area of around 3 hectares has been intervened upon, and around 14,000 endemic plants have been planted.
