Reinforcement of Asplenium hemionitis in Nordeste

Reinforcement of Asplenium hemionitis in Nordeste

June 3, 2024

As part of action C3 – Implementation of pilot projects for the conservation of endemic flora, of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, one of the objectives of which is the conservation of various species protected by the Habitats Directive, an ex-situ population of the Ivy-leafed Fern (Asplenium hemionitis) was established in the Faial Botanic Garden (sub-action C3.1 – Ex-situ conservation).

In addition to this objective, which has already been successfully achieved, strengthening the populations of this species on the island of São Miguel was necessary. Therefore, the São Miguel Environment and Climate Change Service planted nine specimens in the parish of Algarvia in the municipality of Nordeste.

Only one specimen of Ivy-leafed Fern was in this area, and it was propagated in the Furnas Orchard to ensure the existence of this population.

To draw attention to the existence of this species, the Algarvia parish authorities were contacted to raise awareness and alert them to the precautions to be taken when clearing the path where the planting took place.
