DROTRH collaborates with the São Jorge Environment and Climate Action Service to conserve the banks of the Ribeira Seca stream on São Jorge under the LIFE IP CLIMAZ project
April 15, 2024
Under sub-action C5.3 - Demonstration project for “Ecosystem-based adaptation” to tackle climate change, of LIFE IP CLIMAZ, the project’s team carried out work throughout 2023 on the recovery and ecological restoration of the Ribeira Seca stream on the island of São Jorge.
This unique work, led by the Regional Directorate for Spatial Planning and Water Resources (DROTRH) in collaboration with the São Jorge Environment and Climate Action Service, is designed to test innovative methods for protecting, recovering, and restoring the Ribeira Seca stream. Our interventions in priority areas include controlling invasive vegetation, planting endemic and natural species, and implementing natural engineering techniques whenever possible.
We chose this section based on the occurrences reported in RERA – Relatório do Estado das Ribeiras dos Açores.
Our efforts have led to significant results. Invasive species such as Giant Reed (Arundo donax) and Kahili Ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) have been successfully removed. The Giant Reed was eradicated using grubbing mechanisms with the support of a mini-grinder, while the Kahili Ginger was eliminated and removed through cutting mechanisms and manual cleaning.
A critical area on the bank of the stream was also stabilised and consolidated by building a stone wall, using this natural resource provided by the adjoining landowner.
