Air quality monitoring in the Autonomous Region of the Azores is based on two fundamental premises:

- Assessment of air quality based on measurement methods and criteria standard to the entire national territory;

- Making information available to the public.

There are four monitoring ambient air quality in the Azores. One is located on the island of Faial, in a rural area, two on the island of São Miguel, one in an urban area in Ponta Delgada and another in the urban traffic are of Ribeira Grande, and another on the island of Terceira, in the urban traffic area of Angra do Heroísmo.

The pollutants monitored in the Azores air quality monitoring network are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO/NO2/NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particles (PM10 e PM2,5) and ground-level ozone (O3).
