Students from the Forestry and Environmental Resources Technician Course collaborate with the Regional Directorate of Forestry Resources under the LIFE IP CLIMAZ
April 5, 2024
The LIFE Programme is a European Union (EU) financial instrument that supports environmental, nature conservation, and climate action projects across the EU.
Under this programme, the LIFE19 IPC/PT/000004 – LIFE IP CLIMAZ project was approved in 2021, in which the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources (DRRF) is a partner, and which is carrying out various actions aimed at implementing the PRAC – Regional Climate Change Programme.
Among the various climate change adaptation and mitigation sub-actions carried out by the project, the DRRF is responsible for converting 49 hectares of forest, mostly of invasive species, into natural forests.
To this end, on 15 and 21 February 2024, the DRRF had the collaboration of 12 students from the Forestry and Environmental Resources Technician Course, taught by the Nordeste Vocational School, in the recovery of an area of around 2152 m², located in the Núcleo Florestal da Serra da Tronqueira, in Santo António de Nordestinho.
This action allowed the students on this course to discover various forestry operations for the maintenance and afforestation of forest areas. They had the opportunity to promote the manual clearing and planting of this area while learning to identify and differentiate between invasive and endemic species and the various tools used in each of the operations.
