Conservation works on Ilhéu da Praia

March 21, 2024

As part of the conservation work under the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, which is taking place on the Ilhéu da Praia in collaboration with the Graciosa Environment and Climate Change Service, fieldwork was carried out in February, consisting of the following:

Monitoring Artificial Nests:

An action was carried out to monitor and maintain artificial nests for seabirds installed in specific areas to increase the likelihood of nesting.

Change of batteries in the ARU:

ARU (Automatic Recording Unit) is a device that records ambient sounds without the need for continuous human presence. They are used to identify which species of seabirds pass by the Ilhéu de Baixo by identifying the birds' songs.

Weed clearing:

Some invasive exotic species were also controlled, namely Tetragonia tetragonoides and African Tamarisk (Tamarix africana).

Cutting Tolpis succulenta cuttings and propagation:

Tolpis succulenta cuttings were cut for propagation in the greenhouses of the Agricultural Development Services. The individuals resulting from this propagation will be destined for Ilhéu da Praia, strengthening the local populations and the habitats present.
