Reinforcement of populations in Lagoa do Canário on the island of São Miguel
March 19, 2024
As part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, in partnership with the São Miguel Environment and Climate Change Service, the populations of Angelica lignescens, Rumex azoricus and Ammi trifoliatum were reinforced on the shores of Lagoa do Canário, on the island of São Miguel.
A fence was also put up on the banks of this lagoon in partnership with the Ponta Delgada Municipal Services after some of the species' populations were found to have been trampled on.
Lagoa do Canário is the only known refuge for the Lactuca watsoniana population on São Miguel, highlighting the uniqueness of this site in conserving the island's flora diversity. In addition to this species, the shores of this lagoon are also home to populations of Angelica lignescens, Rumex azoricus and possibly Euphorbia stygiana, the latter of which is still being prospected to confirm its distribution.
