Expedition to Santa Maria

Expedition to Santa Maria

March 11, 2024

It is with great satisfaction that LIFE SNAILS, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, has concluded its first scientific expedition to Santa Maria, in which we had the collaboration and presence of several renowned experts. The multidisciplinary team made up of experts in malacology, and members of LIFE SNAILS, LIFE BEETLES, IFCN-IP Madeira, the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Change (DRAAC), the Santa Maria Environment and Climate Change Service (SAACSM) joined forces to assess the presence of the project's target species, representing a significant milestone for the progress of LIFE SNAILS.

This journey began on 17 February and ended on 25 February, during which each day was dedicated to meticulous data collection and a thorough study of the local habitat. The synergy between these institutions and experts allowed for a comprehensive and detailed approach throughout the expedition, enriching our understanding of Santa Maria's unique biodiversity and strengthening the collaborative ties between the organisations involved.

We express our deep gratitude to all the participants and collaborators who contributed to the success of this pioneering expedition. Everyone's commitment and experience were fundamental to achieving our goals and advancing the knowledge and preservation of Santa Maria's endemic snail species.
