LIFE IP AZORES NATURA analyses actions implemented at the Santa Maria Nature Park Advisory Board

Jan. 15, 2024

This project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, was present at the Advisory Board of the Santa Maria Nature Park, intending to present the work carried out during 2023, namely on Vila Islet and Ponta do Castelo.

It's important to mention the various projects carried out to monitor artificial seabird nests on Vila Islet and remove invasive species in this area and at Ponta do Castelo. In addition, several plantings of target species and direct sowing of more than 600 g of Lotus azoricus, Festuca petraea, Plantago coronopus and Daucus carota ssp. azorica were carried out.

Also, as part of the project's conservation actions, prospecting for the target species continued throughout the island, which led to the discovery of a new population of the endemic and protected species of Santa Maria, Euphorbia Santamariae, with around 20 individuals.

In June 2023, ringing training took place, with the collaboration of the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, on Praia Islet, on the island of Graciosa. Basic and Advanced Chainsaw and Working at Height courses were also held, as well as the UAS Operation Specialisation Course - Image Capture and Processing for the production of Orthomosaics.

This participation is part of Action F4 of the project, which establishes participation in the Advisory Board of the Nature Parks on each of the islands, with the aim of the consultants monitoring the management and implementation of the work carried out.
