LIFE IP AZORES NATURA takes part in Macaronesia Biogeographical Seminar

Last November, the 2nd Macaronesia Biogeographical Seminar was held on the island of Terceira, hosted by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, with the participation of two European Union (EU) member states: Portugal and Spain.

The aim of this seminar was to provide support to the member states in the process of committing to and revising the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process. As well as contributing to the implementation of legal obligations under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, the Biogeographical Process will also support the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 targets.

Given that the responsibility for implementing the Natura 2000 network in the Azores lies with the regional environmental authorities, this seminar enabled the competent authorities of the two member states to share information and coordinate conservation actions.

On the first day, there was a Knowledge Market, with a poster exhibition session, and on the last day there was a field trip which took participants to the Natura 2000 sites on Terceira island and to the intervention areas of the LIFE BEETLES and LIFE IP AZORES NATURA projects, where, in the case of LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, we showed the implementation of conservation work in the Lagoa do Negro and Furnas do Enxofre intervention areas.

This sharing of experiences and knowledge between all the organisations involved in the seminar and the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project makes a significant contribution to the dissemination of the project, as well as to the exchange of knowledge and improving the implementation of Community Directives, as part of the project's E2 and E3 actions.
