Action to remove the invasive species Pueraria lobata (kudzu) on São Miguel
Dec. 14, 2023
In 2021, an outbreak of Pueraria lobata (kudzu), a climbing plant considered by the IUCN to be one of the most worrying invasive species, was detected on the island of São Miguel.
This year, a new outbreak of this species was detected in the same place. As part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, and in conjunction with the operational team from the Hydrological Risk Prevention Division of the Territory and Water Services Directorate of the Regional Directorate for Spatial Planning and Water Resources, this species of vine was once again removed using mechanical methods.
As has been the case in the past, the organisations responsible will continue to monitor and maintain this area so that any specimens of the species that may appear are eliminated, thus preventing its proliferation.
The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project is coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change. Find out more at www.lifeazoresnatura.eu/en/
