World Animal Day

Oct. 4, 2023

On World Animal Day, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change recalls that the S.O.S. Cagarro began on 1 October and will be in effect until 15 November.

Night brigades are extremely important in rescuing juvenile Cory’s Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) that leave their nests for their first migratory flight and become blind by artificial lights, falling to the ground, next to roads and their proximity, running the risk of being run over.

Public lighting, mainly through LED lamps, has a major impact on the dazzling of this species. Every year, several entities join this cause, decreasing public lighting in locations identified as critical, that is, with a higher record of Cory’s Shearwaters collections.

Minimizing these impacts facilitates the journey of juvenile Cory’s Shearwaters to the sea, whose eventually does not require our help.

The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change appeals to everyone: “Save a Cory’s Shearwater, Make a Friend”!
