Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change grants concession to operate the Porto Pim Beach Bar

July 12, 2023

This month, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change granted the private use of the bar at Praia de Porto Pim, in the city of Horta, on the island of Faial.

The Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, said that “after a long period of interregnum, which lasted since 2019, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change awarded the operation of Bar do Porto Pim to a new concessionaire, the company Cesar A. R. Silva, Unipessoal, LDA., and the facilities were reopened to the public on July 1st”.

“The reopening of the bar, together with the cleaning and operation of the changing rooms at Praia de Porto Pim, and ensuring the presence of lifeguards, guarantee this bathing area, finally, a support structure, with conditions and infrastructures, that does justice to its level of recognition and to its full enjoyment, in safety, both by the local community and by those who visit us”, emphasizes the Regional Secretary.

Alonso Miguel reinforced the importance of reopening the bar given that “in addition to being a bathing area of excellence, which exhibits the Blue Flag and is recognized as a “Golden Quality” beach, due to its levels of quality of cleanliness, hygiene and safety , "it is also the most popular beach on Faial".

“Porto Pim Beach is located in the Natural Park of the island, awarded “EDEN” (“European Destinations of Excellence”), and in the Protected Landscape Area of Monte da Guia, bringing together an important set of landscape, cultural, tourist and ecological, in the heart of the exceptional city of Horta”, he highlighted.

The official stressed that the reopening of these facilities to the public, which involved an investment of around 30 thousand euros, by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, planned to coincide with the official opening of the bathing season, reinforces even more the commitment of the Regional Government in the improvement of Praia de Porto Pim, following other relevant investments, such as the one that was recently carried out with the acquisition of equipment to support the cleaning of seaweed discharges from the sand, namely a sand cleaning machine, a multifunctional tractor and a transport vehicle, worth around 200 thousand euros.

“This is also another example of the proactivity of the Regional Government, whose action has allowed the reactivation and dynamization of pre-existing infrastructures in the public heritage that until recently were in a situation of disuse and degradation, with the consequent wastage of an enormous potential”, he stressed. .

Alonso Miguel also added that, in addition to the reopening of the bar at Praia da Porto Pim, as well as the delivery of facilities and equipment within the scope of the concession process for operating the bar at the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, on the island of Faial, which took place this year, the public tender procedure for the concession of private use and the installation and operation of vending machines at the Casa da Montanha bar, on the island of Pico, which, shortly section, will also be reopened to the public.

The Regional Secretary in charge of the Environment also took the opportunity to salute “the articulation and substantial efforts made by the technical and operational team of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, citizens and entrepreneurs, in order to make it possible to carry out the work carried out in Praia of Porto Pim, ensuring that its structures and conditions were the most appropriate, and in a timely manner, to meet the quality and safety standards of the operating requirements of this bathing area of high socioeconomic importance for the island of Faial”.
