Regional Directorate of Forestry Resources promotes internal training action under the framework of LIFE IP CLIMAZ

June 22, 2023

Between the 8th and 12th of May, in the context of LIFE IP CLIMAZ project coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for Environment and Climate Change, the Regional Directorate of Forestry Resources, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, promoted another training action on the use of Phytopharmaceutical products.

This training program, which took place on the island of Terceira, follows the hiring of 3 Operational Assistants by the Regional Directorate of Forestry Resources, under this project.

This action also included the participation of 4 employees of the Regional Directorate of Spatial Planning and Water Resources, also hired under this project, as well as other stakeholders.

Taking into account that, in one of the actions (C8) under the responsibility of the Regional Directorate of Forest Resources, there are two sub-actions, namely C8.2 –  Reconversion of fallow pastureland areas into natural forest areas and C8.3 –  Reconversion of invaded fallow forest into native forest, the control of invasive species will be carried out using chemical methods. This initiative aims to train those involved in the principles of crop protection, safety in the use of plant protection products, regulatory systems as well as risk reduction and storage, transportation and accidents involving the handling of these products, essential concepts for those who deal with these products on a daily basis.

By the end of the course, there was also a small demonstration of the thermal weeding machine purchased at the end of 2022 for the island of Terceira, under sub-action C8.4 - Pilot/Demonstrative Project for the use of thermal weeding in invasive species control. In this context, it is intended to promote new control methods that are more ecological and efficient for the control of these species, particularly in areas most frequently used by people, namely 577 kilometres of rural and forest paths, as well as in some recreational forest reserves.
