LIFE IP AZORES NATURA strengthens endemic populations on Faial
May 18, 2023
During April, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, through Action C3.2 – Ex-situ conservation, reinforced some endemic plant populations in Ribeira da Lomba, island of Faial. This site is known to have some nuclei of Azorean Bishopsweed (Ammi trifoliatum) and Azorean Angelica (Angelica lignescens) that, since the beginning of the project, have been monitored and threats controlled through the removal of invasive alien species.
Thus, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, in collaboration with the Faial Environment and Climate Change Service and with the aim of strengthening these populations, planted more individuals in these locations where the invasive plants were removed.
The individuals of Azorean Bishopsweed and Azorean Angelica, introduced in this location, were germinated in the Faial Botanic Garden and kept in a nursery to now be planted in their natural habitat.
The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project is coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change. Find out more at www.lifeazoresnatura.eu/en/.
