LIFE IP AZORES NATURA promotes planting action at Pico do Carvão, São Miguel
May 16, 2023
Following the conservation work carried out by LIFE IP AZORES NATURA at Pico do Carvão, island of São Miguel, namely work to remove invasive species, there was a need to plant native species in this location to occupy the sites released by the invasive species removed.
Thus, under Action E5 of the project “Public engagement and volunteering program” and in partnership with the São Miguel Environment and Climate Change Service, was promoted a volunteer action open to the community with the participation of seven volunteers, three tourists and also some representatives of the Associação para a Promoção e Proteção Ambiental dos Açores (APPAA – Association for the Promotion and Environmental Protection of the Azores), where about 300 individuals of Firetree (Morella faya) were planted.
This site will continue to require monitoring and maintenance as invasive species, namely the Chilean Rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria), will continue to appear.
