Application of Nature-based Solutions on the island of Flores

Application of Nature-based Solutions on the island of Flores

May 9, 2023

The work to control invasive species continues at a good pace in the streams of Lajes das Flores.

Aiming to improve the quality of habitat for the Ironclad Beetle (Tharphius floresensis), has been controlling the invasive species Kahili Ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) along the bank of some streams of Lajes das Flores.

Considering the volume of rhizomes of this species, the soil is often unprotected. The LIFE BEETLES project has been applying several Nature-based Solutions for the construction of stone walls or palisades to prevent erosion and increase the stabilization of the soil of the banks.

The European Commission defines Nature-based Solutions (NBS) as "the application of solutions inspired and sustained by nature, which provide environmental, social and economic benefits, increasing ecosystems' resilience and benefiting biodiversity", being a tool used by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change in its nature conservation projects, as is the case of LIFE BEETLES.
