LIFE VIDALIA welcomes visit from CINEA
April 19, 2023
LIFE VIDALIA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change and co-financed by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, recently welcomed Giulia Carboni, the project advisor form CINEA – European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.
The visit lasted two days, the first of which was dedicated to a technical meeting for presenting he results of LIFE VIDALIA actions, both in technical and financial terms, by the project management team.
Also on the first day, she visited the Monte da Guia intervention area (Fai-Av1) to listen to the conservation work carried out there to increase the population of Azorean Bellflower (Azorina vidalii). It was an area where, at the beginning of the project, there were only three specimens of this protected species in an unfavourable state of conservation, and the current monitoring data counts 72 individuals.
On the second day, the LIFE VIDALIA management team, accompanied by the operational team of the island of São Jorge and its Service Director, took the CINEA advisor to get to know the six areas of intervention of the project. The first stop was at Fajã da Ribeira da Areia, followed by Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, Fajã dos Cubres, Fajã das Pontas and, finally, the Topo area. In all these sites, the panorama of before and after the intervention was displayed, with the various control works of invasive alien species, rodent control, small requalification works to avoid flora invasions and, of course, the population expansion so far obtained of the two-target species of the project, the Azorean Bellflower (Azorina vidalii) and the Azorean Lotus (Lotus azoricus), and accompanying species of their habitat.
The assessor Giulia Carboni was keen to leave her mark, marking an Azorean Bellflower for later monitoring.
