President of the Government marked World Water Day at the Lagoa das Sete Cidades

March 22, 2023

The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, was present today, on World Water Day, in an initiative near the Lagoa das Sete Cidades (lake) municipality of Ponta Delgada, reminding the need to “treat, preserve and care in reservoir”, in what concerns this good.

“We have to take care and compensate for periods of more rainfall or periods of more drought. We also have to work, under the point of view of land-use planning, to contain the risks that excessive rainfall can cause for the safety of populations,” considered the governor.

Accompanied by the Secretary of the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, José Manuel Bolieiro attended the presentation of the book “Monitoring the Water Quality of the Lakes of São Miguel, Pico, Flores and Corvo – Comparison of Results between 2017 and 2020” and accompanied a water quality monitoring activity of the Lagoa das Sete Cidades with young students from São Miguel.

“I was in the presence of two essential elements of our life and future: children and water. I did pedagogy on the importance of water in our lives”, he stressed, recalling, for example, the human and animal consumption of this good.

The United Nations Water Conference, taking place this week in New York, aims to analyse the world's water problems.

It is crucial to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 and ensure access to drinking water and sanitation worldwide.
