LIFE BEETLES: Nature Custody on World Wetlands Day

The LIFE BEETLES project has been establishing nature custody agreements with public and private entities, such as municipalities and tourist entertainment agencies. The goal is to encourage these entities to make an active commitment in nature conservation actions, in parcels of the project intervention areas, promoting an integrated management of the preservation of the target species’ habitat.

Last 2 February, World Wetlands Day, the LIFE BEETLES project and Pico’s Environment and Climate Change Service joined forces with one of the tourist entertainment agencies with which the project has established a nature custody agreement, to carry out a planting of endemic species on the shores of Lagoa do Caiado. In total, 102 plants were planted: 82 Short Leafed Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia) and 40 Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), 70 of which were sponsored by some of the company's clients.

This was an excellent opportunity to commemorate the date and to contribute to the reduction of the ecological footprint inherent to the tourist activity of the company, which is officially responsible not only for the plantation but also to the maintenance of these specimens, for a minimum period of 5 years.
