Moss Campaign

Moss Campaign

Dec. 7, 2022

This Christmas season, the Park Rangers of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change (SRAAC) raise awareness among the general population, within the scope of the Moss Campaign, for the conservation of species of the genus Sphagnum spp. of which 15 native species and 1 endemic species are registered in the Azores.

Commonly known as moss, this species forms an integral part of a specific ecosystem in wetlands, some of which are located in protected areas in the Region. These key elements in the formation of peatbogs, due to their high capacity for absorbing water and accumulating carbon, are important for regulating water after heavy rainfall and, in addition, help to prevent soil erosion. They are also capable of purifying water that retains metals and toxic substances and, due to their acidic pH, have a bactericidal effect.

Contribute to a greener Christmas by conserving these species in their natural habitat.

SRAAC wishes everyone a sustainable Christmas!
