International Mountain Day
Dec. 11, 2022
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. Celebrated annually to raise awareness of the importance of mountains, since 15 % of the world’s population lives in mountainous areas and about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots are located in these areas, the International Mountain Day also aims to alert to the threat of climate change and over-exploitation.
The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change highlights Pico Mountain, classified as a Nature Reserve for 50 years, for its relevance in terms of geological and nature and for the preservation of local fauna and flora.
In order for its geological, biological and heritage wealth to be maintained, it is essential to adopt the code of conduct and good practices when carrying out the trail up to the highest point in Portugal.
