World Soil Day

World Soil Day

Dec. 5, 2022

Have you ever stopped to think about the importance of soil for life on Earth?

Soil plays a fundamental role in human activity, the survival of ecosystems and the proper functioning of the hydrological cycle.

As it is considered a finite natural resource, therefore non-renewable, its correct management and awareness-raising for its preservation are essential.

Soil degradation due to the loss of nutrients is one of the main threats to our nutrition and is, therefore, recognised as one of the main problems for food security and sustainability worldwide. Thus, this year, the theme of World Soil Day is "Soils: Where food begins".

The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change joins this motto, recalling the campaign "Fight Food Waste in the Azores". There is, all over the world, an excessive production of food that ends up being wasted, more exactly one-third! From producer to consumer, everyone is responsible for wasting this food.

Buy consciously and cook according to the portions required. If there are leftovers, share them with family and friends!
