LIFE BEETLES | Volunteering Action

On the past 3rd of March, the LIFE BEETLES project celebrated World Wildlife Day with the volunteering activity “Acacia Hunting”, in Ribeira do Fundão, one of the intervention areas of the project, in Flores Island.
The event counted with the participation of volunteers from the touristic company Experience OC, the Lajes Town Hall, the Lajes Parish Council and the Rangers.
On the scope of this activity, actions of IAS control were performed, essentially of ๐๐ค๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ข ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฐ๐น๐บ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฏ through the debarking method, as well as a plantation of endemic flora, namely: ๐๐ข๐ค๐ค๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ค๐บ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฎ, ๐๐ช๐ฃ๐ถ๐ณ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ข๐ด๐ฆ๐ช, ๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ถ๐ด ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ท๐ช๐ง๐ฐ๐ญ๐ช๐ข, ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ถ๐ญ๐ข ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข, ๐๐ช๐ค๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ข ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข, ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข ๐ง๐ข๐บ๐ข, ๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐น ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฐ subsp. ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข and ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข.
Along the next 4 years, the LIFE BEETLES project intends to promote more volunteering actions, allowing to contribute to the improvement on quality and quantity of available habitat for the 3 endemic beetles of the project, currently Critically Endangered.
The community involvement in the scope of wildlife preservation and biodiversity conservation is crucial for the success of projects such as LIFE BEETLES as well as for the ecosystems’ resilience in a long term.
