Terceira Island’s beetle, a target species of the LIFE BEETLES project, has been classified as “Slightly Depleted”, according to the new IUCN Green Status.

This species did not have a previous classification under this Status as this is a new global assessment measure, which objective is to calculate how close a species is to being ecologically functional in the area where it lives, and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation actions.

The IUCN's "Green Species Status" classifies species into nine categories, which indicate the extent to which they are depleted or recovered, compared to their historical population levels. The conservation measures implemented by the LIFE BEETLES project, such as the restoration of native habitats and the control of invasive flora, have accomplished good results, and the wild earth beetle (Trechus terrabravensis) is already on the way to recovery, according to the Green Status!
