“Ilha do Corvo Reserva da Biosfera”
Oct. 6, 2022
Last September, corvo celebrated its 15th anniversary as a Biosphere Reserve. This classification recognizes territories distinguished by the uniqueness of their natural and cultural heritage, aiming to safeguard them in harmony with the welfare of resident communities. They represent an increasingly relevant model in the global panorama of strategies for protecting, managing and using natural resources and biodiversity.
“Ilha do Corvo Reserva da Biosfera” was the video that kicked off the celebrations. After watching it, a debate was opened on the theme “the past, present and future of Corvo Island Biosphere Reserve”. The unique characteristic of this island, the smallest in the Azores, have promoted the development of a peculiar natural and cultural heritage. Over time, the population of Corvo has developed multiple techniques of artisanal exploitation linked to agricultural production, livestock and fishing. These practices have led some to call Corvo the Wisdom Island.
To finish, the musical group “Mini Guitarristas do Corvo” made a performance.
Events like this one remind us of the value and importance of what is ours and what defines us, the Azorean identity that does not allow for the dissociation between Man and Nature.
