Mistério da Prainha’s Fence on Pico island is finalised

The Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, through the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, installed a 1.4 km fence at Mistério da Prainha, in order to keep cattle away from protected and project intervention areas, namely in the Caminho dos Burros area.

Part of this fence was built on a stone wall, constructed with the communities’ help, demonstrating the growing citizen’s involvement in matters of nature conservation, one of the main goals of the project.

This intervention is part of action C4.1 “Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats” and complements action C13.2 “Minimization of the impacts of agriculture in areas of the Natura 2000 Network”.

Concerning the last one, informative sessions have been organized on some islands, with the objective of raising awareness to the importance and benefits of placing these fences, in dialogue with the population, in particular with agricultural entrepreneurs.
